  2. belief that society should have no 
  3. government, laws, police, or other authority,
  4. but should be a free association of all its
  5. members. It does not mean `without order';
  6. most theories of anarchism imply an order of
  7. a very strict and symmetrical kind, but they
  8. maintain that such order can be achieved by
  9. cooperation. Anarchism must not be confused
  10. with nihilism (a purely negative and
  11. destructive activity directed against
  12. society); anarchism is essentially a pacifist
  13. movement. Religious anarchism, claimed by
  14. many anarchists to be exemplified in the
  15. early organization of the Christian church,
  16. has found expression in the social philosophy
  17. of the Russian writer Tolstoy and the Indian
  18. nationalist Gandhi. The growth of political
  19. anarchism may be traced through the British
  20. Romantic writers William Godwin and Shelley
  21. to the 1848 revolutionaries P J Proudhon in
  22. France and the Russian Bakunin, who had a
  23. strong following in Europe. The theory of
  24. anarchism is expressed in the works of the
  25. Russian revolutionary Kropotkin. From the
  26. 1960s there were outbreaks of politically
  27. motivated violence popularly identified with
  28. anarchism; in the UK, the bombings and
  29. shootings carried out by the Angry Brigade
  30. 1968-71, and in the 1980s actions directed
  31. towards peace and animal-rights issues, and
  32. to demonstrate against large financial and
  33. business corporations.
